Aluminium sliding windows: series, tracks and drainage explained

AluK Home sliding window series matched to your opening size, glass and exposure. For bedrooms, balconies and living rooms where swing space is the problem.

WHO THEY SUIT

The right choice when a sash cannot swing outward

A sliding window moves sideways on a track, so it needs no clearance in front of or behind the wall. That makes it the practical choice for balconies, narrow lanes, window seats and any room where furniture or a grille sits close to the opening.
The trade-off is that a sliding window opens only half of its width at a time, and its track collects dust and rain. If you want the whole opening free for ventilation, a casement window is the better pick. If you want a large view with limited ventilation, look at fixed glazing beside a small sliding sash.

SC45, SC40, SC95 and S115NI: what each is for

Sliding systems differ mainly by sash weight and frame depth. SC45 is a 45 mm slim system with a 33 mm visible interlock, glazing from 4 to 24 mm, up to 120 kg per sash and a standard sash of 1200 x 2800 mm. AluK positions it for tropical and hot climates.
SC40 is the 40 mm value series: 24 mm visible centre width, single glass of 4 to 8 mm, up to 120 kg per sash, tested to 25,000 cycles, with rails in anodised aluminium or stainless steel. SC95NI is a 95 mm non-insulated frame for heavier sashes, standard sash 1500 x 3500 mm. S115NI takes 28 to 36 mm glass and offers an integrated flyscreen.

Four things that decide how a sliding window behaves

Track and drainage

Water that enters the track leaves through weep holes. A blocked weep hole is the usual cause of a leaking slider, so the series matters less than keeping channels open before every monsoon. SC45 and SC40 use a wider track and deeper gutter.

Sash weight and glass

Heavier glass adds sound and heat control but also load on rollers. Stay within the sash weight the series lists, and ask for the glass build-up, not only the thickness.

Locking

SC45 offers one to four point locking. More points hold a tall sash firmly along its height, which matters on upper floors with wind exposure.

Thermal option

SC95 is available thermally insulated (SC95TT) or non-insulated (SC95NI). A west-facing room benefits most from the thermal break, an interior partition does not need it.

ALTERNATIVES

When to choose sliding and when not to

Choose sliding when the opening is wide and low, the room has furniture close to the wall, or the window is on a balcony. Choose casement when you want the full opening free, or when the window faces driving rain and you prefer a sash that seals by compression. Choose slimline when sightline matters more than ventilation. For door-height openings, the sliding doors page covers the heavier systems.
The monsoon windows guide sets out how rain direction changes this choice.

What to ask any supplier about a sliding window

Which series, in writing

SC40 and SC95 are very different products. The quotation should name the series, the number of tracks and whether the frame is thermally broken.

How the track is drained

Ask where the weep holes sit, whether they are covered by flexible seals, and how they are cleaned. A good answer is specific.

How the sash is removed for cleaning

You will need to lift sashes out for track cleaning. Ask for a demonstration on the showroom unit.

Sliding windows in the cities we serve

Our showroom is in Belagavi, where premium aluminium windows in Belagavi can be viewed and ordered. In Goa the sliding track needs particular attention to rain and salt, as covered in aluminium windows for Goa. We also arrange projects in Hubballi-Dharwad and Karwar. Outside Belagavi, projects are arranged per project; confirm coverage with us.

FAQ

Sliding window questions

Answers drawn from AluK series documents.
It depends on series and sash weight. SC45 lists a standard sash of 1200 x 2800 mm and up to 120 kg per sash, SC95NI a standard sash of 1500 x 3500 mm. We confirm limits after measuring your opening.
Not by design, but blocked drainage and poor sealing at the wall cause leaks. AluK states that heavy rain exposes weak sealing and installation gaps. Keep weep holes clear and ask for a drainage detail.
Yes. SC45, SC40 and S115NI offer a built-in mosquito frame or integrated flyscreen. Confirm this on the quotation.
Security depends on locking and glass. SC45 offers up to four-point locking. Ask which lock and which glass are included.
SC45 lists 4, 5, 6, 8 and 24 mm. S115NI takes 28 to 36 mm. Heavier glass needs a heavier series, which is why we specify series and glass together.
Yes, at the Tilakwadi showroom. Ask which sliding series are on display when you call.
