Aluminium sliding door prices: what changes the number and by how much
Sliding doors are priced by system, panel count, glass weight and threshold, not by width alone. A worked example shows the relative effect of each choice.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Door width sets the area, but panel count and glass weight set the system and most of the price
We found no authoritative, citable price list for aluminium sliding doors in India, and we are not going to invent one. What is published is mostly sliding-window rates from listings and vendor guides. Those suggest the shape of the market: simple sections of about 27 mm sold at roughly Rs 290 to 600 per sq ft on directory listings (a Bengaluru and a Goa listing, basic sections, not system aluminium), a roughly Rs 650 per sq ft IndiaMART sliding listing, and branded system lines near Rs 1,400. These are indicative and unverified, and they stop at glass and hardware that a large door needs.
Large sliding doors cost more per square foot than windows because of heavier hardware, thicker glass and bigger profiles. The useful question is which of your choices moves the total, and by how much.
The lines in a sliding door quotation
A sliding door quote uses the same lines as a window quote, with heavier weighting on glass and hardware. Our window price guide explains the general structure. For doors, check these in particular.
System and series: slim value series, standard, ultra-slim inline such as Infineo, or lift and slide. The series sets the maximum sash load and the profile rate.
Panel and track count: two, three, four or six panels on two or three tracks, plus any fixed panels.
Glass build-up and thickness: weight rises with every millimetre, and so does the hardware class.
Threshold and track type: standard, low or flush; flush options cost more in detail and in floor preparation.
Finish: standard, dual colour or coastal-grade.
Extras: flyscreen track, locks, handrails, motorisation, and installation difficulty such as floor level or crane access.
One 3.6 m by 2.4 m opening, three ways to configure it
The opening is 8.64 sq m, about 93 sq ft (1 sq m is 10.764 sq ft). Glass weighs about 2.5 kg per sq m for each millimetre, so 6+12+6 is about 30 kg per sq m and 8+16+8 about 40 kg per sq m. These are arithmetic estimates of glass alone, before the frame.
Option 1, two panels on two tracks. Each panel is about 1.8 m by 2.4 m, 4.3 sq m, so roughly 130 kg of glass in 6+12+6 and about 170 kg in 8+16+8. Only half the opening is clear at a time. Few vertical lines, large panels, a heavier hardware class and higher handling and installation effort.
Option 2, three panels on three tracks. Each is about 1.2 m wide, 2.9 sq m, roughly 86 kg in 6+12+6. Lighter panels suit a lighter series. One third of the opening is clear, and the third track adds profile and drainage detail.
Option 3, four panels on two tracks. Each is about 0.9 m wide, around 65 kg in 6+12+6, and half the opening is clear. Hardware per panel is lighter, but there are more rollers, more interlocks and more visible verticals.
None of these is universally cheapest. Option 1 puts money into glass and hardware class. Option 3 puts it into the number of sashes and hardware sets. A quote that offers only one of them has already made a decision for you, so ask for two and compare.
RELATIVE EFFECT OF EACH CHOICE
How to estimate the effect of a change without a rate card
Use the direction and the thing each line scales with. These are structural relationships, not prices.
Wider opening, same height: glass area scales directly. Frame length rises more slowly. Weight per panel rises unless you add a panel.
Thicker or laminated glass: glass line rises, and you may cross into the next hardware class. This is a common cause of surprise.
More panels: lighter panels, more sets of hardware and interlocks. Fixed panels usually cost less than sliding ones because they need no rollers or locks.
Slimmer systems such as Infineo: more precise profile, concealed frame options and hardware; the series sits higher on cost than a value series.
Lift and slide: heavier hardware and glass in most installations; worth it for large panels, see sliding vs lift and slide.
Flush threshold: adds detailing and floor coordination, which belongs in the civil scope too.
Finish: dual colour and coastal-grade finishes add to the surface treatment line.
From enquiry to a figure you can rely on
We quote sliding doors after site measurement, because floor levels, lintel depth and track drainage change the system. Before that, we can give you a range of options for a given opening, with the specification written out and the quantities shown, so you can compare structure. Final figures carry a specification, a drawing and a measured size.
It depends on series, size, panel count, glass and finish. We do not have a verified, citable price list, so the honest answer is to send opening sizes and receive a written quote after measurement.
Usually a sliding door of the same width costs less, because folding systems use more hardware and panels. Folding gives a wider clear opening. See folding vs sliding doors.
A large door has a large glass area, and double, laminated or low-E builds raise the rate per sq ft. Glass also drives panel weight and hardware class.
It depends on access, floor level and sealing detail. One third-party guide gives about Rs 30 to 65 per sq ft for windows; for large doors, ask for a separate installation line.
