The default door for balconies, living rooms and garden edges

A sliding door keeps its panels in the same plane and moves them sideways on rollers, so it needs no swing space and works for most openings in apartments and houses. It is the right door when you want to open a room to a balcony without losing furniture space, or when a wide opening needs two or three panels.
Its limits are that only part of the opening is clear at any time, and the track at the bottom needs care. If you want the whole width open, look at folding doors. If the glass is very large and heavy, compare with lift and slide.

Which sliding series carries which panel

Infineo S146LM has a 21 mm interlock with a 35 mm handle visible when closed, a standard sash of 3000 x 3500 mm and a maximum sash load of 350 or 450 kg, with glass up to 32 mm and stainless-steel double-wheel rollers tested to 25,000 cycles. AluK Home lists panels up to 3.5 m in height or width.
SC95NI is a 95 mm non-insulated frame with a standard sash of 1500 x 3500 mm and sash load 200 kg, up to 300 kg in some configurations, available with 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6 sashes on 1 to 4 tracks. S115NI offers up to 300 kg per shutter, glass of 28 to 36 mm and an integrated flyscreen. SC45 and SC40 are the slim, 120 kg series for lighter doors and windows.

PERFORMANCE

Four things that decide how a sliding door behaves

Rollers and track

Infineo uses stainless-steel double-wheel rollers inside the shutter, which AluK says reduces dust accumulation. SC40 is tested to 25,000 cycles. Rollers are the part that wears, so ask how they are replaced.

Threshold

Infineo offers an optional flush threshold and a wheelchair-friendly bottom track. SC140 offers a low threshold. A flush threshold is comfortable but needs drainage designed in at the floor.

Locking

Infineo uses a slim handle with single-point and multi-point locks. Multi-point locks hold a tall panel at several places, which helps sealing and security.

Water and air

AluK Home lists the Versatile sliding range with air tightness Class 4 (600 Pa) and water Class 8A (450 Pa) in its thermally broken version. These are test values on a sample, not a promise for your wall.

When to choose sliding over the other doors

Choose sliding for openings up to the series limit with no need to clear the full width. Choose patio doors when the door sits at a garden edge with its own threshold and security needs. What to ask any supplier about a sliding door

Which series and which sash weight

A door sold as slim may be an SC45 rated for 120 kg per sash. Check that the glass you want fits the series limit.

How many tracks

Two tracks let two panels overlap. Three tracks allow a third to park behind. The number of tracks changes the frame depth and the cost.

How the track drains

Ask where water leaves and how it is cleared. Blocked weep holes are a common failure.
