WHAT IT IS

The door where the weather, the floor level and the family all meet

A patio door is not a separate product. It is a sliding, lift and slide, folding or casement door installed at the edge of a garden, terrace, pool deck or courtyard. What makes it different is the location. It sits at an outdoor level change, it takes rain and splashes, and it is used by children, pets and people carrying things.
Because of that, the choice is driven by threshold, drainage, security and flyscreen far more than by sightline. Light and view are the easy part. The threshold and the water path decide whether the door works on a wet day.

Which AluK systems work as patio doors

For sliding patio doors, Infineo offers an optional flush threshold and a wheelchair-friendly bottom track, with single-point and multi-point locks. S115NI offers an integrated flyscreen option and cremone, flush, single- and multi-point handles. Four details that matter at a garden threshold

Level change

A flush threshold is comfortable but sits close to outside water. Plan an external drain and a fall away from the door, ideally at the time the paving is laid.

Flyscreen

Garden doors invite mosquitoes at dusk. Choose a system with an integrated flyscreen or plan a separate sliding screen, and check how it stacks.

Security

Multi-point locks hold the door at several points. For ground-level doors, ask about glass type and lock count together.

Finish and cleaning

Garden doors collect dust, soil and splashes. AluK says aluminium is cleaned with soapy water. Near the sea, ask for the finish class and rinse routine.

CHOOSING

Which patio door for which garden

A balcony or small garden door of up to two panels is usually a standard sliding door. A wide terrace where you want to host usually calls for folding doors. What to ask any supplier about a patio door

The threshold section

Ask for the sill detail drawn to scale with the external finished level. Water paths are visible on a drawing.

The finish certificate

Ask for the finish class and certificate, particularly near the coast. AluK offers customised finishes for aggressive environments on request.

Flyscreen and security together

Ask how the flyscreen and the lock interact. A screen that blocks the lock handle is a daily nuisance.

It depends on width and use. Sliding suits most, lift and slide suits large glass, and folding suits a fully open terrace. We compare them for your opening.
Infineo offers an optional flush threshold. A flush sill needs an external drain and fall designed in. Ask for the sill drawing.
Poorly drained thresholds and installation gaps cause leaks. AluK says poorly sealed windows let in air, dust and water in heavy rain. Plan drainage with the paving.
S115NI offers an integrated flyscreen, SC45 and SC40 offer built-in mosquito frames, and BSF70 lists optional flyscreens.
Security depends on locking and glass. Infineo offers single-point and multi-point locks. Ask for the lock type and glass in the quotation.
