Aluminium sliding doors for Karwar homes

Sliding doors for balconies, living rooms and terraces, specified for about 3,279 mm of annual rain and humid sea air. For homeowners, architects and homestay owners on the Karwar coast.

What a sliding door has to survive in Karwar

Karwar sits at the mouth of the Kali river with the Western Ghats behind it, at an elevation of about 6 m. Rain averages roughly 3,279 mm over about 103 rainy days, and June and July each bring close to 1,000 mm. A sliding door here works against water for four months, not four weeks.
Humidity averages 72% and reaches 86% in July and August, so the door is damp for most of the year as well. Summers run about 27 to 34 C, warm but not the heat that drives glass choice inland. For aluminium sliding doors in Karwar the real job is keeping rain and moist air out of the track, the rollers and the finish.

How the system works and which AluK series fits

A sliding door is a glass panel on rollers inside a frame, with a track at the sill. Rain that reaches the track has to leave through weep holes in the channel. When those holes are blocked, water backs up and finds its way indoors. Most monsoon leaks start in this channel rather than in the glass.
AluK Home offers several sliding series, and the right one depends on the opening. For a balcony or an ordinary house door, SC45 is the usual starting point: a 45 mm system with a wider track and deeper gutter for drainage, listed for tropical and hot climates. Larger and heavier sashes move to SC95. For frameless glass walls in a living room, the Infineo sliding system is the one to look at.

Look inside the frame

Cut sections of AluK systems show what you are actually buying: chamber layout, glazing pocket, track and threshold.

Infineo S146LM frameless sliding door

A frameless sliding door with a concealed outer frame and 21 mm interlock. Thermally broken or non-thermal sections, flush threshold, 350 or 450 kg per sash.

SC140TT thermally broken sliding and lift and slide

A 140 mm thermally broken system for sliding and lift and slide doors. Glass 10 to 40 mm, up to 300 kg per sash and 400 kg with a trolley.

Four things that matter for a Karwar sliding door

Sideways rain in June and July

Rain here arrives on the wind, so a door on an exposed face sees water at the sill as well as on the glass. Ask the supplier to show the track drainage section for your series, and check where the water will go once it leaves the frame. A balcony slab that falls toward the door defeats good weep holes.

Salt air on a coastal plot

Chloride from sea spray attacks the protective layer on aluminium, so the finish and the hardware belong in the specification from the start. Ask which finish is quoted, request the certificate for your colour, and plan on rinsing the frame and track with fresh water regularly if the plot is close to the water.

Replacing old timber doors

At 72 to 86% humidity, timber door frames swell, stick and darken, which is why many owners here look at aluminium. The replacement needs a true, square opening and a sealed junction with the wall. We cannot know the condition of your opening until we measure it on site.

Planning near the shore

Building close to the shore is controlled under the CRZ rules. A like-for-like door in an existing opening is a different question from a new balcony or extension. Ask your architect or the coastal authority about the plot; we do not advise on CRZ status.

How to decide: sliding, lift and slide, or folding

A standard sliding door is the right answer for most Karwar homes: it does not swing into rain, it takes little floor space and it is the simplest system to service. It stops being the right answer at the edges of the range. These are the thresholds we use when we sit down with a floor plan.
If you are still comparing systems, the sliding versus lift and slide guide sets out the differences in neutral terms.

From enquiry to installation for a Karwar project

Send the opening list

Call +91 89704 69999, or use the quote form with a list of openings, rough sizes and a few photos of each wall. Say which face looks toward the water or the open side.

Visit the Belagavi showroom, or talk it through

The showroom at Tilakwadi has full-size sliding systems you can operate. If travel is not practical, we go through series and finish choices by phone and drawings.

Site measurement

Karwar is outside Belagavi, so site visits are arranged per project. Please confirm coverage and timing with us. Final sizes are taken from finished openings, not plans.

Specification and fabrication

The quote names the series, finish, glass build-up and hardware. Fabrication is coordinated through certified AluK Home partners against the measured sizes.

Installation and aftercare

Installation is followed by a handover check of tracks, weep holes and locks. We explain what to clean before each monsoon.

What to ask any supplier before you order

Ask for the drainage detail in writing

Request a section drawing showing the track, weep holes and where water exits, for the exact series quoted. A supplier who cannot produce it is selling you the look and nothing else.

Ask what the finish and hardware are

Get the finish type, the certificate for your colour and the roller and lock material. AluK states Qualicoat-certified technology for its Signature Palette; the class held by your colour is a question to put to the supplier.

Ask who services it after handover

Sliding doors need tracks cleaned and rollers checked. Ask who will come, from where, and what a visit involves, particularly if the supplier is not in Karwar. Also ask how the product relates to IS 1948:2024, the current Indian standard for aluminium framed doors, windows and sliders.

FAQ

Sliding doors in Karwar: questions we hear

Direct answers, including where we have limits.
It should not if the system drains properly and is installed correctly. Water collects in the track and leaves through weep holes, so the drainage detail, a clear track and a sealed junction with the wall decide the result. Blocked drains are a common failure. Keep tracks clear before June and check the sealing at handover.
Aluminium does not rust like iron, but chloride from sea spray can attack a poor finish and affect hardware. AluK offers customised finishes for aggressive environments on request. Ask for the finish certificate and coated or stainless hardware, and rinse the frame with fresh water as part of regular cleaning.
Usually yes. The frame is fitted into the existing opening, which must be measured after any plaster or tiling is final. Timber that has swollen in the humidity may need the surrounding masonry checked first. We confirm feasibility at measurement, not from a photo.
No. Our showroom is in Tilakwadi, Belagavi, where full-size sliding, folding and casement systems are on display. Karwar projects are arranged per project; please confirm coverage with us before you plan around a date.
Replacing a door in an existing opening is different from altering a balcony or building an extension. Coastal rules (CRZ) may apply to the plot, and we cannot judge that for you. Check with your architect or the coastal authority for any change to the structure.
SC45 is where most balcony conversations start: it is a slim system with a wider track and deeper gutter listed for tropical and hot climates. Larger glass or a frameless look moves to SC95 or Infineo. We confirm the series against your opening and exposure at the showroom.
