Four considerations for windows on the Karwar coast

Casement or sliding, room by room

A sliding window opens half its width; a casement opens fully, which matters when you rely on a breeze at 86% humidity. Use casements in bedrooms and bathrooms and sliding windows where a wide, low sill or a balcony leaves no space for a sash to swing.

Outward-opening sashes and monsoon wind

An outward sash is pushed onto its seals by wind when closed, but is exposed when left ajar in a gale. Ask for friction stays or restrictors and decide which windows you will leave open in June. That choice affects the window type you buy.

The wall junction, not the glass

Water usually enters at the joint between frame and masonry. Ask how the frame is fixed and sealed, and whether the sill slopes away. On houses close to the Kali estuary, a sealed junction matters more than a heavier frame.

Insects and ventilation

Karwar’s humidity and rain mean windows stay open for air through the evening. Ask for built-in flyscreens or mosquito frames at quotation stage; AluK’s SC45, SC40 and S115NI sliding lines list integrated screen options, and retrofitting is harder.

What to check before you order windows

Ask for the system and its datasheet

Ask the supplier to name the series for every window type and to supply the published data sheet. A system window is designed and tested as a whole; a locally assembled window depends more on the fabricator.

Ask about glass and safety

For low windows, doors with side lights and large panes, ask for the glass build-up and whether it is safety glass under IS 2553 (Part 1). Thickness and type affect safety, noise and cost more than the frame does.

Ask who is responsible after handover

Ask in writing who attends to leaks, a stiff handle or a seal after installation, and how quickly. Also ask how the product relates to IS 1948:2024, the current Indian standard for aluminium framed doors, windows and sliders.
