Aluminium windows and balcony doors for high-rise apartments
Wind pressure, safe glass, society approval and cleaning access change with every floor. What to specify, what to ask the builder or society, and which AluK series suit balcony and bedroom openings.
Above the fifth floor, a window is a structural component
On the ground floor, a window mainly has to keep out rain and thieves. On the twentieth floor it also has to resist wind pressure that rises with height, keep a child from falling against it, and be cleanable without anyone leaning out. The same series of window can be right for one floor and wrong for another.
AluK Home says its systems suit monsoon rain, coastal settings, high-rise living and busy streets, and are designed for heat, humidity, dust, noise, rain and wind. That is a statement about the range. The numbers for your tower come from the structural designer and the facade consultant, and we work to those.
Which AluK series suit which apartment opening
For balcony doors and living room sliders, AluK positions the SC45 slim sliding system for tropical and hot climates, with a 33 mm visible interlock and up to 120 kg per sash, and the SC40 value series for housing. For larger glass and heavier sashes, the SC95 series takes up to 300 kg per sash on the NI version, and the Infineo sliding system suits premium units and penthouses with a 21 mm interlock.
For bedrooms and kitchens, casement windows give a full-opening seal, and sliding windows save swing space. AluK’s Versatile range includes integrated flyscreens and balcony handrails on sliding systems, and its casement range lists hurricane barrier options. Confirm the exact series and glass with us for your floor.
Balcony slider: SC45 or SC40 for standard sizes, SC95 for larger glass
Living room, premium unit: Infineo with concealed frame and slim interlock
Bedroom: casement for a full seal, or sliding window to save swing space
Kitchen and utility: casement with flyscreen, or sliding with integrated mosquito frame
Balcony handrail integration: listed on the Versatile sliding range
A 67 mm thermally broken series for high thermal and acoustic performance, with burglary class RC2. AluK recommends it for replacing old wooden and PVC windows.
IS 875 (Part 3) is the Indian code for wind loads on buildings. Pressure depends on height, terrain and location, and the building designer sets the figure. We ask for it before specifying, and we do not quote a generic rating as a promise.
Safe glass and balcony edges
Toughened or laminated glass is chosen for doors, low sills and large panes, and IS 2553 (Part 1) covers safety glass for buildings. Ask what glass sits next to a floor-level opening and who checks the fall protection.
Outward opening and cleaning
An outward-opening casement on a high floor must be cleanable and must not swing into wind unsupervised. Sliding windows and tilt-turn units are easier to clean from inside. Decide how frames and glass will be cleaned before you choose.
Noise on a busy road
AluK’s guidance is that laminated acoustic glass with double glazing is generally recommended, and that frame, seals and installation also matter. See noise-reducing windows and ask for test data for the build-up.
HOW TO DECIDE
Sliding or casement, and when a fixed pane helps
Most apartment owners need ventilation, view and low upkeep, so the decision is usually a sliding unit for living spaces and a casement for bedrooms. A fixed pane is useful beside a sliding door where an opening is not needed, and it reduces moving parts, which matters at height.
Use these rules as a starting point:
Narrow balcony: sliding, so no door swings across it. See sliding doors
Bedroom facing a road: casement or sliding with laminated double glazing
West-facing glass: choose low solar heat gain glass first; see window glass options
Heavy rain on the facade: confirm drainage at the sill; see monsoon protection
Three questions to settle with the builder or society
Is permission needed
Societies usually restrict changes to the external appearance. Get written approval for frame colour, grille position and any change to opening size before you order.
Who is responsible for the facade line
Windows in many towers sit within a facade design. Ask the builder or association what colour and pattern must be maintained, and whether a contractor list applies.
How will the work reach your floor
Lift access, hoisting, working hours and debris removal need to be agreed. Glass and frames reach the opening by lift or hoist, and the society sets the rules.

FAQ
Apartment window questions
Direct answers for owners, builders and designers.
Safety depends on glass, fixing and design, not the frame material alone. Specify toughened or laminated glass where required, ask for the design wind pressure from the structural designer, and have the installer confirm fixing details.
SC45 and SC40 suit standard sizes, SC95 carries larger and heavier sashes, and Infineo suits large premium glass. We match the series to the opening size and glass at the showroom.
In most cases yes, particularly where frame colour, grille position or the external appearance changes. Ask your association for the written rule before you order.
They can. AluK says laminated acoustic glass with double glazing is generally recommended, with frame quality, seals and installation also deciding the result. We do not quote a dB figure without test data for the exact build-up.
We can discuss a batch for a builder or association. Schedule, access and coverage are arranged per project, so confirm before planning. See for architects for specification support.
Choose units that can be cleaned from inside, such as sliding or tilt-turn, and ask us to confirm how each opening will be reached. Do not lean out of a casement to clean it.
