A door-height opening is a structural, weather and daily-use decision at once

Windows can be forgiven. A door is used many times a day, carries heavy glass, sits at floor level where water collects, and is the opening visitors notice first. Choosing between a sliding, lift and slide, folding, casement or patio door should start from three facts: how wide the opening is, how heavy the glass will be, and how exposed the wall is to rain.
AluK Home publishes limits for each system, and we use those figures. The point of this page is to help you shortlist before you visit the showroom, so the conversation there is about your opening and not a catalogue.

What each door is best at

Sliding doors

The everyday choice for balconies and living rooms. AluK’s range runs from SC45 to the Infineo S146LM with a 21 mm interlock and panels up to 3.5 m. Compare sliding systems.

Lift and slide doors

For large, heavy glass. SC140TT carries up to 300 kg per sash, and up to 400 kg with an additional trolley. The handle raises the sash onto rollers. See lift and slide.

Folding doors

BSF70 folds panels to the side for openings of up to six or seven metres, depending on configuration. Look at folding doors.

Casement and patio doors

Hinged doors for a traditional look and tight seal, and patio doors for the garden or terrace edge. Casement doors and patio doors.

WHICH SYSTEM FOR WHICH OPENING

A rough shortlist by opening width and use

As a rule of thumb, up to about two metres a standard sliding or casement door usually does everything you need. From roughly two to three metres, sliding with two or three tracks is common. Beyond that, or where the glass is heavy, lift and slide is designed for it: AluK Home quotes openings over 3 m high and panel weight up to 400 kg. For wide openings that must clear entirely, folding doors stack panels to the side.
These are starting points, not rules. Panel width, glass thickness, threshold height and whether the door is exposed to rain all change the answer, which is why we measure on site before specifying.

  • Wide, heavy glass, exposed wall: lift and slide
  • Wide, clear opening to a terrace: folding
  • Garden or terrace edge: patio door with a low threshold

Four details that decide how a door lives with you

Threshold and drainage

A threshold that is too high trips people, and one that is too low lets rain in. AluK offers flush and low-threshold options on several systems. The right height depends on the floor and drainage outside.

Hardware

Sliding doors use slim handles with single or multi-point locks. Folding doors use flush pop-up handles, drop bolts and multi-point locking. Ask for the lock type in the quotation.

Glass

Door glass is heavy. AluK lists glass limits per system, from 10 to 40 mm on SC140TT. Laminated or toughened glass is normal for doors.

Finish

Aluminium is corrosion-resistant, but finish quality matters near the sea. AluK offers customised finishes for aggressive environments on request, so ask for the class and certificate.

Which series and which size limit

Ask for the exact series and the datasheet limit for your panel. Limits differ between SC45, SC95, SC140 and Infineo.

Thermally broken or not

Most AluK doors come in both versions. The quotation must say which.

Who owns the remeasure risk

Ask in writing who pays if the opening differs from the drawing.

Aluminium door questions

AluK states Infineo panels up to 3.5 m in height or width, with a standard sash of 3000 x 3500 mm. Other series are smaller. Limits depend on configuration, so we confirm after measuring.
When glass is large and heavy, or when the wall is exposed to rain. AluK Home quotes lift and slide for openings over 3 m high and panels up to 400 kg.
They can be, with correct threshold and drainage. Many joints between panels mean installation quality matters more. Read the folding doors page for detail.
AluK’s Signature Palette has eight tones in matt, textured and metallic variants. Dual colour is available on most systems.
Some can. S115NI offers an integrated flyscreen, and BSF70 lists optional flyscreens. Ask which applies to your chosen series.
