Standard sliding door sizes in India, in feet and millimetres

Common heights and widths, panel arithmetic for 2, 3 and 4 panel doors, fitting clearances and the AluK limits that decide how large a panel can be. Written for owners, architects and builders sizing an opening.

THE SHORT ANSWER

There is no legal standard size, but there are common ones

India has no mandatory standard sliding door size, only common ones: 6.5 to 7 ft high (1981 to 2134 mm) and 5 to 8 ft wide (1524 to 2438 mm). One Indian schedule lists sliding glass doors of 6 x 7 ft and 6 x 8 ft, width first. Wider openings take three or four panels.
Treat them as a starting point. AluK Home sliding doors are made to measure by certified AluK Home partners, so your opening, the panel count and the system’s panel limit decide the size. Each is covered here in feet and millimetres.

Commonly used sliding door sizes in India

Width first, then height. Every millimetre figure is the feet figure multiplied by 304.8 and rounded to the nearest millimetre.

6 x 81829 x 2438484.46
8 x 72438 x 2134565.20

Commonly used market sizes from Indian door guides (Interior Company, Houseyog), not a standard. Millimetre and area figures: arithmetic, 1 ft = 304.8 mm.

Sliding door heights, and where each figure comes from

Most Indian guides use 7 ft, which is 2134 mm; metric drawings often build it at 2100 mm. Some websites convert 7 ft to 2200 mm. That 66 mm error is more than the whole fitting clearance the older IS 1948 text allows across a frame.

WIDTH AND PANELS

How opening width, panel count and panel width fit together

A sliding door is described by its overall width and its number of panels. Two panels on two tracks is the simplest layout; three or four panels make narrower, lighter panels, with more interlocks across the view.
We found no Indian source that publishes standard widths for two, three or four panel doors, so the table gives the arithmetic: opening divided by panel count. Compare it with the system limits below.

Panel width for 2, 3 and 4 panel sliding doors

Equal panels, before interlock overlap.

164877243816261219

Arithmetic, not a standard. Real panels are slightly wider because they overlap at the interlock, and the clear opening is smaller than the overall width. The overlap comes from the fabricator's drawing.

AluK sliding systems: published panel sizes

A system limits the size of each panel, not the opening. These are the standard sash sizes on AluK’s India datasheets. The pages do not say whether a standard sash is an absolute maximum, so read them as a guide and confirm before you fix the opening.

Source: in.aluk.com product datasheets. AluK Home India gives Infineo panels up to 3.5 m in height or width, while the datasheet gives a 3000 mm standard width. The SC45 and SC40 pages give no unit; millimetres are assumed.

READING THE LIMITS

What the AluK limits mean for a real opening, and where sources disagree

Put the two tables together. A 12 ft opening (3658 mm) in two panels needs panels of about 1829 mm: wider than the 1500 mm SC95 standard sash, inside the SC140TT and Infineo figures. In four panels each is about 914 mm, within SC45. A 16 ft opening in two panels gives about 2438 mm per panel, close enough to the 2500 mm SC140TT figure that the interlock overlap decides it.
Two AluK sources differ. AluK Home India says Infineo sliding doors reach up to 3.5 m in height or width, with a 21 mm interlock; the datasheet lists a 3000 x 3500 mm standard sash. Both hold only if 3.5 m is the height, so we plan around 3.0 m wide panels and confirm anything larger per project.

Opening, frame and the gap between them

The size on a quote is usually the frame, which is always smaller than its opening. The 1961 edition of IS 1948, the Indian standard for aluminium doors, windows and ventilators, gave frame sizes after allowing 12.5 mm of clearance on all four sides of a modular opening. That is the older standard; it has been replaced by IS 1948:2024 and the current edition governs. The gap on your job is the one on the fabricator’s drawing, as our guide to measuring openings explains.
Door size minimums are set by the National Building Code and local bye-laws, and summaries of them disagree, so confirm with your architect. One Indian guide says any lintel span over 1.8 m needs structural design, and a 6 ft opening is already 1829 mm. See our notes on large sliding doors for architects.

How to read a sliding door size in feet and in millimetres

Most enquiries arrive in feet and most drawings in millimetres, so first check which number is which. Some Indian schedules write doors height first and windows width first. We write width x height in millimetres and repeat it in feet.
Multiply feet by 304.8 to get millimetres, and inches by 25.4. Round only at the end. The companion chart of standard window sizes in India covers sill heights and square metre conversions.

THRESHOLD AND TRACK

Threshold and track depth are decided at floor level, early

Every track adds depth to the bottom frame. That frame either sits on the finished floor, forming a step, or is recessed into the slab so the floor runs through. Which is possible depends on the system and the floor build-up, so settle it before screed and tile go down.
On a rain-exposed balcony, a level threshold also needs a plan for water. Ask for a sill section drawing showing frame depth, finished floor levels inside and out, and the drainage route.

Balcony, patio and wardrobe sliders are sized differently

Balcony doors are often the smallest sliders in a home. One Indian guide gives balcony and terrace doors 900 to 1200 mm wide by 2100 mm high, and AluK describes SC95 as suited to balcony doors of villas and apartments. Exposure and the threshold matter more than size here; see our balcony sliding door guide.
Patio and living room sliders are where widths of 8 ft and more appear, with three and four panel layouts on our aluminium sliding doors page. Wardrobe sliders are furniture shutters sized to the cabinet, and this guide does not cover them.

When a lift and slide door is the next step

A standard slider rolls its panel on wheels, which works until panels become very tall or heavy. AluK Home describes its lift and slide doors for floor-to-ceiling openings over 3 m high, with panels up to 400 kg and a 52 mm interlock.
Consider it when a panel would be taller than about 3 m, when insulated glass makes panels heavy, or when two wide panels would pass a standard system’s sash size. The trade-offs are in sliding versus lift and slide doors.

MISTAKES

Four sizing mistakes we see on sliding doors

Converting 7 ft to 2200 mm

Seven feet is 2134 mm. A 2200 mm frame ordered for a 7 ft opening is 66 mm too tall and will not go in. Convert from the measured opening and round once, at the end. On a metric drawing, decide whether the door is 2100 or 2134 mm and write it down.

Not saying which number is the width

A door written as 6 x 7 can be read either way, and some schedules put height first for doors. State W x H and the unit on every sketch, and the mix-up is caught before it reaches the factory.

Fixing the opening before choosing the system

An opening built for two 1.8 m panels rules out any system whose standard sash is narrower. Check the panel arithmetic against system limits at design stage, on paper, while the opening can still move a few centimetres at no cost.

Forgetting the floor build-up

Tile, screed and stone all raise the floor. A track fixed before the floor level is final becomes a step or a trip edge. Agree the finished floor level and the threshold detail in writing before the frame is made.

FAQ

Sliding door size questions

Short answers, with the source type and the limits stated.
There is no single legal standard. Indian guides give sliding doors 6.5 to 7 ft high (1981 to 2134 mm) and 5 to 8 ft wide (1524 to 2438 mm), and one schedule lists 6 x 7 ft and 6 x 8 ft. These are commonly used sizes. Made-to-measure systems go larger: AluK Home gives Infineo panels up to 3.5 m, depending on configuration.
Seven feet, which is 2134 mm, is the usual figure in Indian guides, and metric drawings often build it as 2100 mm. Tall main doors go to 2400 mm. Taller sliders are possible: several AluK datasheets list a 3500 mm standard sash height. Confirm the finished floor level before you fix the height, because flooring changes it.
It depends on the opening, since no Indian source publishes standard panel widths. As arithmetic, a 6 ft opening (1829 mm) in two panels gives about 914 mm per panel, and a 9 ft opening (2743 mm) in three panels about 914 mm each. Real panels are slightly wider because they overlap at the interlock.
It is set per panel by the system. AluK India datasheets list standard sashes of 1200 x 2800 (unit not stated) for SC45, 1500 x 3500 mm for SC95, 2500 x 3500 mm for SC140TT and 3000 x 3500 mm for Infineo S146LM. The door can be wider by adding panels. Standard sash is not defined as an absolute maximum, so confirm per project.
2100 divided by 304.8 is 6.89 ft, about 6 ft 10.7 in. For comparison, 2400 mm is 7.87 ft, 3000 mm is 9.84 ft and 3500 mm is 11.48 ft. Going the other way, 7 ft is 2134 mm. Keep the decimals until the last step so rounding does not add up across a wide opening.
In a framed aluminium slider the glass is whatever the system is rated for. AluK datasheets give 4 to 8 mm single glazing for SC40, up to 24 mm for SC45, up to 28 mm for SC95, 10 to 40 mm for SC140TT and up to 32 mm for Infineo. Larger panels and insulated glass push you towards the heavier systems.
