Glass railing price: reading published rates per sq ft and per running foot

Railing prices come in two units, often side by side, and the scopes behind them differ a lot. This guide shows published figures, converts between units with simple arithmetic and lists what a railing quote must state.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Glass alone and a fitted railing are priced very differently

The glass railing price in published Indian listings runs from about Rs 150 to 265 per sq ft for 12 mm toughened glass alone to roughly Rs 1,000 to 2,000 per running foot or per sq ft for fitted railings with stainless or aluminium hardware (IndiaMART listings, October 2026). These are asking prices, and the units differ.
Those listings are not quotes. Most omit the railing height, the fixing system and installation. We supply railings using Imperio profiles, and the profile, fixing and glass build-up are confirmed per project once we have seen the edge. We price after measurement. This page shows how to read published numbers so that any quote, ours included, can be checked.

Published glass railing prices, as listed by sellers

Each figure is one seller’s asking price or one guide’s range, copied with its own unit. Do not average them, and do not compare a per foot row with a per sq ft row without converting first.

Per sq ft and per running foot are different units

A running foot is measured along the balcony or stair edge, at whatever height the railing stands. A square foot rate is charged on length times height. A figure means nothing until you know which unit it uses and what height it assumes. The national IndiaMART railing category shows rates per foot, per sq ft and per piece on one page, so mixed units are normal and easy to misread.
The conversion is arithmetic: rate per sq ft equals rate per running foot divided by railing height in feet. A run 3.5 ft high (about 1.07 m) has 3.5 sq ft of glass per running foot, so Rs 1,500 per running foot is about Rs 430 per sq ft. On a 3 ft run it is Rs 500. One metre is 3.28 ft.
Take a balcony edge 15 ft long and 3.5 ft high, which is 52.5 sq ft. At Rs 1,300 per running foot it totals Rs 19,500. At Rs 1,300 per sq ft it totals Rs 68,250. Same headline number, three and a half times apart. That is arithmetic on listing figures, not a quote, and it is why the unit belongs on every quote.

What moves a glass railing quote up or down

Imperio Railing Systems names glass thickness, system, finish and job size as the main drivers in its own guide, and Homelane adds hardware. No listing prices each part separately, so read the list below as lines to ask about, not as a cost split.

Glass thickness and safety glass

Railing glass should be safety glass. IS 2553 (Part 1) is the Indian standard for safety glass in buildings, covering toughened and laminated types. Toughened glass is about four times stronger than annealed glass, breaks into small granular pieces and cannot be cut or drilled after toughening. Reference sources note that nickel sulphide inclusions can make a pane break on its own years later. Laminated glass holds its fragments on a plastic interlayer.
Sellers disagree on thickness. A Pune listing calls 12 mm the most popular choice for homes and says commercial sites often need 15 or 19 mm. UK supplier guides suggest 15 mm for external frameless railings, and Homelane recommends laminated glass of 10.76 to 13.52 mm for high-rise homes. The right build depends on system, span, height and wind, so ask for a structural check rather than a stock thickness. Our guide to glass types compares toughened and laminated builds.

SYSTEMS

Spigot, channel, post and handrail, or frameless

The system decides how the glass is held, what the slab edge must take and how much metal the quote carries. Listings describe four broad families, and each asks something different of the structure behind it.

Balcony railings and staircase railings

A balcony is a straight run at one height, so units convert easily. Stairs slope, each panel is a different shape, and landings add corners. Some stair listings price per running foot, some per step. Hyderabad stair railing listings range from Rs 390 to 2,490 per sq ft and Rs 1,350 to 1,950 per running foot, by glass, stainless grade and order size.
Height is not a single number. Published sources cite 1.0 m, 1.05 m and 1.2 m for balcony railings, depending on the code clause or state rule they quote. Confirm the required height and design load with your architect and the local building rules, in writing, before anyone quotes. Our glass railings page shows how we handle balconies, terraces and stairs.

What every glass railing quote must state

A comparable railing quote states its unit and height, then marks every item as included or extra. Railings beside a sliding door are often quoted with the door, so our aluminium door price guide is worth reading alongside.

MISTAKES

Three mistakes that make a railing price look cheaper than it is

Comparing a per foot rate with a per sq ft rate

Each running foot carries several square feet of glass, so a per sq ft figure looks lower for the same railing. Convert both to one unit at your railing height, as shown above, and ask each seller which height they assumed.

Treating a glass price as a railing price

Glass-only listings at Rs 150 to 265 per sq ft cover the panel alone. Fittings, profile or posts, handrail, installation and sealing come on top, so a low figure can be honest and still describe part of the job.

Pricing before the edge is checked

A railing is only as secure as the slab or beam behind it. Edge condition, concrete and waterproofing are checked on site and can change the system. A rate given before anyone sees the edge is an estimate.

FAQ

Glass railing price questions

Answers to the railing cost questions people search for most.
Published listings run from about Rs 150 to 265 per sq ft for 12 mm toughened glass alone to roughly Rs 1,000 to 2,000 per sq ft or per running foot for fitted railings (IndiaMART, October 2026). Units, heights and scope vary, so convert every figure to one unit at your railing height and rely on a written quote after measurement.
A design guide says glass railings generally start around Rs 1,500 per foot and can reach Rs 2,000 or more, depending on hardware and finish (Homelane, January 2026). Directory listings show fitted railings at about Rs 1,200 to 1,950 per running foot, with a few far lower. Check the height behind each figure.
Listings for 12 mm toughened glass alone run from about Rs 150 to 265 per sq ft in Bengaluru (IndiaMART, October 2026). Fitted 12 mm railings are listed from about Rs 430 to 1,650 per foot or per sq ft, many between Rs 1,050 and 1,300. Indian sellers call 12 mm the usual home choice; ask for a structural check of your span.
Both are safety glass under IS 2553. Toughened glass is about four times stronger than annealed glass and breaks into small pieces; laminated glass keeps its fragments on an interlayer. One design guide recommends laminated glass near the sea and in high-rise homes. Ask the supplier which build suits your span and height.
Hyderabad stair railing listings range from Rs 390 to 2,490 per sq ft and Rs 1,350 to 1,950 per running foot, by glass, stainless grade and order size, and a Bengaluru listing asks Rs 1,450 per running foot for a frameless stair (October 2026). Sloping panels, landings and handrails make measurement essential.
Tuffen and tuffened are trade spellings of toughened, the heat-treated safety glass used in most railings. Listings using the word are priced like other toughened railings; one search result showed a stainless railing with 10 mm tuffened glass at about Rs 1,300 per sq ft. Ask for the glass type by its proper name on the quote.
