WHY BENGALURU IS DIFFERENT

A sliding door in Bengaluru has to cope with rain-wind, dust and a busy street

Bengaluru sits at about 900 m and gets roughly 1,078 mm of rain a year, mostly from the southwest monsoon (June to September) and again after it in October and November. September is the wettest month at about 208 mm. It is not the salt-laden coast, and the air is drier than Goa: average humidity at 17:30 is about 52 per cent, peaking near 67 per cent in August.
What it does have is density. The city passed 8.4 million people at the 2011 census, and many older plots became multi-storey apartment blocks. A sliding door here usually opens onto a balcony above a road, not a garden. That puts the weight on track drainage, roller quality, dust sealing and what your association will permit.

Which AluK sliding system suits a Bengaluru opening

Four things to settle before a sliding door goes into a Bengaluru flat or villa

Rain-wind and the drainage path

Heavy September and October storms push water along the bottom track, not straight down. Ask which weep holes carry water out, whether the outer flange is covered, and how far the track sits above the finished floor. SC45 and SC40 are listed with a wider track and deeper gutter. A blocked weep hole causes more leaks than the profile itself.

Dust, rollers and wind noise

Owners often ask whether sliders rattle in gusts and whether wheels need replacing. Rollers and brushes are consumables on any slider. Ask for the roller type, whether it can be changed from inside without removing the glass, and where spares come from. Infineo’s rollers are tested to 25,000 operating cycles; ask what the quoted series is rated for.

Balcony rules and association approval

In September 2021 BBMP issued a circular stating that covering balconies or modifying them after the occupancy or completion certificate goes against the 2003 building guidelines and the National Building Code of India 2016, and that pre-approval is needed. It also called balcony grilles unsafe. We have not confirmed how it is enforced now, and BBMP has since been split under the Greater Bengaluru Authority. Check your association and municipal rules before ordering.

Facade colour and uniformity

Resident associations in apartment blocks often insist on one frame colour across the facade. Ask the committee for the approved colour first. AluK offers an eight-colour Signature Palette and dual-colour options, so match the colour name and finish code, not a photo, before fabrication starts.

HOW TO DECIDE

Sliding, lift and slide, or folding: a short decision guide

Most Bengaluru balcony and living-room doors are well served by a standard sliding system. Move to something else only when one of these is true:
  • The opening is under about 3 m wide and the glass is ordinary double glazing: a standard sliding series is usually enough.
  • You want slim sightlines and very large panels: look at Infineo, and ask for the maximum sash size for your glass build-up.
  • The panels will be heavy or the door is used daily by elderly family members: compare it against a lift and slide door, which is easier to move at weight.
  • You want the whole width open: a folding door stacks to the side, but needs a parking bay and a better-drained threshold.
  • Noise is the main reason you are changing: glass thickness and seals matter more than the frame. Read the sliding vs lift and slide guide before fixing a budget.

What to ask any supplier of sliding doors in Bengaluru

Which system, and which version of it

Ask for the system name, whether it is thermally broken or non-insulated, the sash weight it is rated for and the glass build-up in the quote. A generic ‘Euro series’ section and an engineered system are not the same product, and the price should reflect that.

How water leaves the frame

Request the drainage detail for the exact series: where weep holes sit, what covers them and what happens at the corners. If a supplier cannot show it, you cannot judge it. Ask who returns to check it after the first heavy rain.

Spares and service after handover

Wheels, brushes and handles wear on every slider. Ask what is replaceable, how long a visit takes and who attends in Bengaluru. We arrange aftercare per project, so confirm this for your address before the order is placed.

No. Our AluK Home Experience Center is in Tilakwadi, Belagavi, a different city, with full-size sliding, folding and casement systems. Bengaluru projects are discussed individually and arranged per project. AluK Home also has its own experience centre in Bengaluru, opened in September 2024 according to press coverage. You may want to see systems there too.
Rattle comes mainly from loose interlocks, worn rollers and poor sealing, not from aluminium as such. Ask for the interlock and brush details, have the sash adjusted on installation and check it again after the first season. We cannot promise silence without seeing the opening and exposure.
That depends on your association and the municipal rules. BBMP’s 2021 circular spoke about covering and modifying balconies after the completion certificate and called grilles unsafe, but it did not address glazing as such and its present enforcement is unconfirmed. Get written approval from your association before ordering.
Often yes, up to the glass weight the system is rated for. For larger spans, compare Infineo, which lists panels up to 3.5 m and up to 450 kg per sash, and also look at lift and slide. The deciding factors are opening width, threshold level and how often the door is used.
Double glazing helps, and AluK’s own article says laminated glass with double glazing is generally recommended for noise. Frame seals and installation also count. Ask for the exact glass build-up in writing and compare like with like across quotes.
