How long do aluminium windows last, and how to read the warranty

What the published lifespan figures are based on, which parts wear out first and how to read a window warranty before you sign. Independent figures and vendor claims are labelled so you can tell them apart.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Decades for the frame, less for the parts that move and seal

How long do aluminium windows last? A UK specifiers’ guide lists 30 to 50 years for powder-coated frames, and an industry-commissioned study argues for longer when frames are well specified. Gaskets, rollers and sealed glass units usually need attention sooner. We found no independent data from Indian monsoon or coastal conditions.
Verdict: treat any single number with care, including ours. Life depends on the finish and its pretreatment, the hardware, the installation and how the window is looked after. Warranty is a separate matter. AluK publishes no warranty terms on the pages we reviewed, so warranty terms have to be requested in writing for each project, from us or from whoever supplies your windows. Our checklist for choosing a window maker puts that request alongside the others.

Published lifespan figures and where they come from

Search results for this question quote anything from 15 to 50 years, and most of those figures come from sellers. The table separates independent sources from vendor claims.

Why the lifespan figures disagree

The ranges differ because they measure different things. A specifier’s table assumes a window built to a named British standard with a certified finish, in a British climate. A seller’s blog describes its own product. The 80-year figure comes from a study commissioned by the aluminium industry and is described as an interim conclusion for aluminium that is well specified and well detailed. None of these was measured through a Goa monsoon or on the Karnataka coast.
One guide we found says no universal replacement age applies. Windows are rarely replaced because the aluminium itself has worn out. More often they have become stiff to operate, let in draughts, show corrosion, or the double glazing has fogged. So the more useful questions are which parts wear, how easily they can be replaced, and what the warranty says about each.

What decides how long a window lasts

The frame metal is rarely the limit. What happens to its surface, its moving parts and the joint with the wall matters more.

When to repair and when to replace

Common signs that a window needs attention are stiff operation, draughts, visible corrosion, and fogging or condensation between the panes of a double-glazed unit, which points to a failed edge seal. Most are component faults. Gaskets, rollers, locks and glass units are often replaced long before the frame gives out.
That is a reason to keep the paperwork. A quote that names the series, the hardware and the glass build-up makes a repair years later much easier, because whoever comes to fix it knows what to order. Replace the whole window when the frame or finish has failed beyond repair, or when parts can no longer be found. Our guide to double-glazed windows in India explains how sealed units are put together.

READING A WARRANTY

How to read a window warranty: what is covered and what is not

Window warranties are usually split by component. Consumer guidance from the United States gives a useful outline, though US practice is not an Indian norm. Glass is often covered for factory defects and seal failure. The frame, sash and hardware are covered separately, and hardware may be covered for a shorter time than glass. Some warranties are pro-rata, shrinking in value each year. Labour may or may not be included, and installation faults usually fall under the installer’s workmanship warranty rather than the manufacturer’s product warranty.
Exclusions deserve as much attention as cover. Commonly excluded, or treated as voiding the warranty: improper installation, neglect or misuse such as abrasive cleaners on aluminium, accidental breakage, natural disasters, and added hardware that alters the unit. Coating guarantees often require documented routine cleaning, and some fabricator terms exclude direct saltwater contact. Before signing, ask for these answers on paper:

What AluK publishes about warranties, and what to ask us for

We reviewed AluK’s partners page, its maintenance and ‘why aluminium’ articles, its buyer-mistakes article, its system-window article and its UK care page. None of them states warranty terms, and a search found no AluK warranty document for India. AluK says its Signature Palette powder finish offers over 20 years of durability. That is a durability claim, not a warranty.
So we will not quote a warranty period here. Ask us, or any supplier, for the current written warranty for your project before you sign, covering each component and the conditions attached. Fabrication for our projects is carried out by certified AluK Home partners, and terms can differ between partners and projects, which is one more reason to have them on paper. Read how our AluK Home partnership works, or ask for the terms along with your quote request.

FAQ

Lifespan and warranty questions

Short answers, with the source of each figure named.
Published lifespans overlap. Wikipedia’s materials table gives uPVC 25 to 50 years and well-kept old timber windows 50 to 100 years, while a UK specifiers’ guide lists 30 to 50 years for powder-coated aluminium. Actual life depends more on finish, hardware, maintenance and climate than on the material name, so compare written specifications and warranty terms.
Persistent fogging or condensation between the panes means the edge seal has failed and the unit needs replacing. Cloudy glass, draughts and stiff operation are other signs worth checking. Sources disagree on seal life: a UK guide anticipates 25 to 30 years for drained and vented glazing, while Wikipedia gives 10 to 25 years as typical.
There is no fixed age. Replace a window when the frame, finish or fixings have failed beyond repair, not because a set number of years has passed. Gaskets, rollers, locks and glass units are often replaced long before the frame, so a well-documented window can usually be repaired rather than removed.
Aluminium does not rust like iron, but sea salt can pit unprotected metal and lift a powder coat from cut edges and scratches. Finish class, thickness, pretreatment and hardware grade decide how well a window copes. See our coastal windows guide for the classes and thickness readings to ask for.
Each suits different openings. uPVC does not corrode and suits small openings; aluminium suits large spans and slim frames, and needs a thermal break where heat matters. Lifespan ranges overlap. Our uPVC and aluminium comparison sets out the trade-offs, and as an aluminium supplier we suggest you weigh our view with that in mind.
No. A durability claim describes how a finish is expected to perform. A warranty is a written promise with a period, conditions and a claim process. AluK describes its Signature Palette as offering over 20 years of durability, which is a claim. Ask for the warranty itself, in writing, with what it covers and what voids it.
In consumer guidance, common exclusions are improper installation, neglect or misuse such as abrasive cleaners, accidental breakage, natural disasters and added hardware that alters the unit. Coating guarantees may also require documented cleaning, and some exclude direct saltwater contact. Read the exclusions before signing and keep cleaning records with the quotation.
It depends on size, glass, series and finish, so a single figure would mislead. Our aluminium window price guide explains what drives the cost, and an itemised quotation for your own openings is the only reliable number. Ask for warranty terms in the same document.
