Black aluminium windows, wood finish and slim frames: what to check first

A guide for homeowners and architects choosing a dark or wood-look frame. It covers heat and fading, the coating standards to ask for and how wood finish is made, plus which AluK colours and slim sightlines are actually published.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A dark frame works well when the coating and the heat are planned for

Black aluminium windows work well in Indian homes when the coating is rated for outdoor weathering, the frame on sun-facing walls has a thermal break or the glass controls heat, and you accept that dust shows more on dark frames. Wood finish aluminium is a printed pattern baked into powder coat, not timber.
AluK’s published colours need reading closely. The eight colours of its Signature Palette include no pure black; the darkest are Midnight Ash and Urban Charcoal. AluK Home’s folding door page does list grey, white and black, with more colours on request. We have found no AluK woodgrain finish. So we confirm the exact finish, colour name and sample for each project before you order, and we put it in writing.

What AluK publishes about colours and finishes

We have read each AluK page below and noted what it says. None gives a black colour code, a woodgrain finish or a coating class, which is why finish choices are confirmed per project rather than promised here.

Do black aluminium windows get hot?

The frame does. Dark surfaces absorb more solar heat, and Studio Matrx’s guide to black-frame windows in India says a black frame in full afternoon sun runs significantly hotter than a white one. It gives no temperature, and we have not found an Indian test figure, so treat any number you are quoted with care.
The guide’s advice is to specify a thermal break, because a black aluminium frame without one conducts heat worst. Choose Low-E or solar-control glass, since glass makes up most of the window. Add shading, such as overhangs, louvres or external blinds, on walls that take afternoon sun. Our thermal break guide explains how the insulating strip works, and the window glass options guide covers solar-control glass.

FADING AND COATINGS

Do black frames fade, and which coating should you ask for?

UV exposure can fade a powder coating, and the change shows more on darker shades. One aluminium system maker writes that discolouration is rare and usually tied to extreme conditions or poor maintenance. That is a manufacturer’s view, but the practical point stands: the coating specification matters more on a black frame than on a white one.
Studio Matrx recommends an architectural-grade powder coat rated for outdoor weathering, ideally to AAMA 2604 or 2605 or Qualicoat, and a written coating warranty from the fabricator of about 8 to 15 years against fading and chalking. Qualicoat is a quality label for powder coatings on architectural aluminium, established in 1986, covering adhesion, colour stability, weather resistance and corrosion protection. A powder maker’s cross-reference matches Qualicoat Class 1, 2 and 3 to AAMA 2603, 2604 and 2605, and approval is product-specific.
AluK’s Signature Palette page describes Qualicoat-certified technology with over 20 years of durability. That is marketing language, not a warranty, and the page does not state a class. Ask for the coating class and the warranty terms in writing. Our powder coating versus anodising guide compares the two finishes.

Black frames on coastal homes

Salt air attacks coatings. Studio Matrx says coastal homes in places such as Goa, Kerala and Chennai should specify marine-grade pre-treatment under the powder coat. AluK India’s 67IW page offers high-resistance finishes for aggressive environments on request, and AluK Home describes its sliding doors as built for conditions from salty sea air to intense summer heat. Ask which pre-treatment and coating your frames will actually get, and read our guide to aluminium windows near the sea before choosing a dark colour for a seafront house.

How wood finish aluminium windows are made

Wood finish aluminium is not timber. A UK trade site, Door and Window Experts, describes the usual sublimation process. The aluminium is powder coated, a printed wood-pattern film is fitted over each bar, the air is drawn out, and the bar is baked at about 200 C. The heat transfers the pattern into the coating, so it covers the full profile.
The same source says the finish resists corrosion, UV, coastal salt and pollution. Touch-up pens exist, but repair depends on how bad the damage is. Lead times are usually longer than for plain powder coat, and not every systems company offers woodgrain.
We have not found a woodgrain finish on AluK’s published pages. AluK India does list a product called 50IWOOD, described as an aluminium-wood thermal break system, which is a different idea: aluminium combined with wood. We have not read its details. If you want a wood look, tell us at the start and we will confirm what can be supplied for your project.

SLIM SIGHTLINES

How slim AluK's slim systems are

Colour changes how slim a frame looks. Studio Matrx notes that a black frame reads thinner than a white one of the same width, because dark recedes, and that slimline systems are the other route to minimal sightlines. These are the figures AluK publishes.

Pairing a dark finish with a slim frame

For the thinnest look, the two choices work together. A slim system reduces the aluminium you see, and a dark colour makes what remains recede. A slim black frame also puts more weight on the glass choice, because there is more glass and less frame to look at. Our slimline aluminium windows page explains where each millimetre is measured.
Finish and opening type are separate decisions. For full-height hinged pairs to a balcony in a dark frame, see our French windows design guide. To choose the opening for each room first, start with window types for Indian homes.

Looking after a dark or wood-look finish

Clean gently

Dust and water spots show on black frames. Studio Matrx suggests a soft, damp microfibre cloth and no abrasives, which dull matt finishes. One system maker advises cleaning two to four times a year with mild, pH-neutral products; that is its own advice, not AluK’s. Our window maintenance guide covers tracks and seals.

Choose the sheen with care

Matt or satin finishes show marks less than gloss, according to Studio Matrx. On a dark colour the difference is clear on a sample held in daylight, so look at one against the actual wall and floor before deciding, not under showroom lights alone.

Keep a touch-up pen

Small chips happen during building work and when furniture moves in. Ask for a matching touch-up pen at handover. On woodgrain, repair depends on how much of the pattern is damaged, so keep frames protected until the site work is finished.

FAQ

Black and wood finish questions

Direct answers, including what AluK has not published.
UV exposure can fade a powder coating, and fading shows more on darker shades, though one manufacturer describes discolouration as rare and tied to extreme conditions or poor maintenance. Specify an architectural-grade powder coat rated for outdoor weathering, and ask for a written coating warranty: Studio Matrx suggests about 8 to 15 years from a reputable fabricator.
The frame does. Dark surfaces absorb more solar heat, and Studio Matrx says a black frame in full afternoon sun runs significantly hotter than a white one, though it gives no figure. A thermal break, Low-E or solar-control glass and external shading reduce the effect. A black frame without a thermal break conducts the most heat into the room.
No. It is aluminium with a printed wood pattern transferred into a powder coating, so it looks like timber but is a coated metal frame. Touch-up pens exist, but a UK trade source says repair depends on how bad the damage is. Ask to see a sample in daylight before you choose the pattern.
The aluminium is powder coated first. A printed wood-pattern film is fitted over each bar, the air is drawn out, and the bar is baked in a sublimation oven at about 200 C. The heat moves the pattern from the film into the coating across the full profile. Lead times are usually longer than for plain powder coat.
Qualicoat is a quality label and standard for powder coatings on architectural aluminium, set up in 1986. It covers adhesion, colour stability, weather resistance and corrosion protection, and member coaters are inspected routinely. Approval is product-specific, so ask which class applies to the coating on your frames and for the certificate, not just the word Qualicoat.
AluK Home publishes a 21 mm interlock for Infineo sliding, with 35 mm of handle visible when closed, and ultra-slim 65 mm profiles with a hidden sash for Infineo casement. BSF70 folding doors have 97 mm symmetrical sightlines. These are manufacturer figures, and we confirm visible widths for your configuration before quoting.
Yes, with the right preparation. Studio Matrx says coastal homes should specify marine-grade pre-treatment, because salt air attacks coatings. AluK India offers high-resistance finishes for aggressive environments on request. Ask which pre-treatment and coating class your frames will get, and what the written coating warranty covers for a coastal site.
We have no sourced comparison of black against white frames, so we will not claim a difference. Studio Matrx, in its 2026 guide to black-frame windows in India, gives indicative supply-only prices of Rs 350 to 3,000 per sq ft for powder-coated aluminium and Rs 250 to 800 per sq ft for black-foil uPVC.
